New figures released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that more than 800 dog attacks have been investigated by police in the past two and a half years. Labour Assembly Minister Christine Chapman voiced her horror at the attacks, and revealed that she would be lobbying the rural affairs minister to introduce the compulsory microchipping of pet dogs .

11 dogs were destroyed as a result of the 812 incidents which have been investigated since early 2007. The incidents predominantly involve pit bull terriers, bull mastiffs and Rottweilers . Perhaps the most concerning of the incidents reported involved a toddler being targetted by a pet dog, while numerous individuals have suffered facial injuries as a result of the attacks, and other animals including rabbits and cats have also been killed.

The issue of dangerous dogs has resurfaced recently with the tragic death of John Paul Massey in Liverpool. The four year old died from severe head and neck injuries after being attacked by an illegal dog at his grandmother’s home. There have been calls to strengthen the enforcement of legislation outlawing certain dog breeds, while vets have joined calls for the compulsory microchipping of pets .
