Uncle Arrested Following Fatal Dog Attack

The uncle of John Paul Massey has been arrested on suspicion of his manslaughter. The four year old boy was mauled to death by a pit bull dog earlier this week while staying at his grandmother’s house in Liverpool. John Paul died from severe neck and head injuries, and following a protracted police investigation with the assistance of vets, it has been confirmed that the pet dog in question was an illegal dog breed under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. 21 year old Christian Foulkes was the owner of the animal, which was shot by police marksmen in front of the property on Monday after the attack.

Merseyside Police have this week apologised for failing to investigate reports of dog breeding at the house. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating why the police did not follow up the reports.

The tragic incident is sadly not an isolated case, but follows the death of Ellie Lawrenson on New Year’s Day 2007. Her death saw the issue of dangerous dogs projected into the media spotlight, though dog fighting continues, with ‘dog rolling’ rife in the UK.
