Following the tragic death of four year old John Paul Massey in Liverpool, Merseyside Police are continuing their investigation into whether the animal in question was a banned dog breed . The tragic incident occurred on Monday morning, and is the latest high profile case of a youngster being mauled to death by a dog.
A post-mortem is being carried out today of the pet dog which was shot dead by police, allowing vets to determine whether the animal should have been banned under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. A spokeswoman urged patience, saying that the identification of whether a dog is illegal takes time and that forensic examinations of the animal are required. If the animal proves to be illegal, Merseyside Police have warned that the owner may face prosecution.
Helen Foulkes, John Paul’s grandmother, was also injured trying to intervene in the attack, but she has since been released from hospital. Police say that John Paul’s 13 year old brother has been left ‘deeply traumatised’ by the attack. Pupils at John Paul’s school are being offered support after teachers broke news of his death to them on Monday. Neighbours and family friends have also paid tribute to John Paul.
