A man who strangled a Staffordshire bull terrier has spoken out to explain his actions. The father of four from Rugeley had been branded a ‘monster’ for his actions, but says he had no choice but to kill the animal when it started mauling his family’s four month old puppy, Diva. The attack took place as Ivan Shirley was walking his family pet back from town with his wife and ten year old twin daughters.
Speaking to the Mercury, Mr Shirley said, ‘They were walking back from town when a Staffy came out of nowhere. I got a garbled call saying my family was being attacked and I heard my family screaming. My daughter came to get me and the dog was still attacking when I got there. Me and another bloke tried to stop it but it wouldn't stop. It was mauling and attacking the puppy. There was a lead on the floor and I wrapped it around the dog and lifted it up, it still had the puppy in its mouth. I had it in my arms and I couldn't think what to do and I killed it – I had to take it out or my daughter and puppy could have been attacked again.’
