Rugby Borough Council has decided against implementing dog control orders following a significant response from the public. The Council was considering a series of dog control orders, which would have prevented pet dogs from roaming around parks and fined owners who let their animals off their leads. However, following the councils decision to reject the proposal at a meeting last week, dogs will still be able to roam free across the Assheton, Featherbed, Whinfield and Whitehall recreation grounds.
Borough councillor Heather Timms, portfolio holder for the sustainable environment, said, We received a large number of responses to the consultation on the dog control orders. Dog control is an emotive issue and we are really pleased that so many people took the time to tell us what they thought. That is what consultation is all about, giving the people of Rugby the chance to have their say. You told us that you wanted to retain the right to exercise your dogs off-lead in the boroughs recreation grounds and we listened. But with those rights come responsibilities, and it is clear from the consultation that dog owners should be required to clean up after their pets wherever they go.
