New research from Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance claims that almost two thirds of cat and dog pet insurance policies in the UK don’t provide dental cover for either injury or illness. A Defaqto report commissioned by Sainsbury’s suggests that 63 per cent of pet insurance doesn’t cover for such problems. The latest survey reveals that pets undergo a total of 100,000 dental treatment each year, at a cost of roughly £21 million to their owners. The survey also estimates that non-routine dental care accounts for 35,000 pet insurance claims each year.
The most common dental problems encountered by cats and dogs are dental traumas, such as fractured jaws, gum infections or abscesses. Each treatment costs between £150 and £250 on average in vets bill, whilst a jaw break can cost as much as £2,000 to cure in the worst cases.
Neal Devine, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance Manager, warned, ‘Pet owners should take care to choose a pet insurance policy that provides dental cover in the event of both illness and injuries. Some policies will say that dental treatment is covered but it's important to watch out for those who really only provide dental cover resulting from accidents. As pets get older the majority of dental treatment required is more likely to be as a result of illness rather than injury.’
