Strathclyde Police Launch Dog Appeal

Tue, 20 Jan 2009

A Scottish police force has launched an urgent appeal for new four legged recruits. It is in need of ‘specialist officers’ of a certain dog breed to help locate missing persons and track down offenders. Strathclyde Police’s dog branch is searching for young German Shepherds and is looking for the public to donate their pets to the cause.

Any donated dogs will undergo a series of tests to see if the animals have the appetite for the work. It is by no means guaranteed that the pets will meet the force’s high standards, with just one dog out of fifteen candidates accepted into the force. In the event that the dogs are unsuccessful in their training, they can either be returned to their owners or re-homed .

Sergeant Tracy Reid, from Strathclyde Police's dog branch, said, ‘A police dog can sniff out a well-concealed offender or locate a missing person in a fraction of the time it would take for officers to find them, making them an essential part of everyday policing. German Shepherds are working dogs and have a lot of energy, so a dog that might seem like a handful at home may make an excellent police dog.’
