Animal Charity Criticises Dog Owner

Tue, 14 Jul 2009

The Scottish SPCA has labelled a dog owner as ‘cowardly’ and ‘callous’ after a dog was found suffering from a huge mouth tumour. The pet dog had been abandoned near a public footpath on a patch of grass beneath a tree at South Inch in Perth last week. A local vet had to put the animal to sleep so severe was its condition, and the animal charity are appealing for anyone with any information about the elderly Jack Russell or its owner to contact them or the police .

Brian Cowing, the charity’s chief inspector, voiced his belief that the dog had been deliberately abandoned under the grass tree. Mr Cowing said the dog had not been well enough to walk there himself, and revealed that the dogs jaw had dislocated and broken as a result of the size and severity of the seemingly untreated tumour. The dog had been unable to eat, and vets estimated the tumour would have been there for between two and four months.

If the charity and the police are able to track down the animals owner, they will face a £5,000 and/or six months in prison. They can also expect to be banned from keeping animals for life.
