Dog Owners Warned of Coastal Path Dangers

Thu, 09 Jul 2009

The Pembrokeshire coastal rescue team has issued a warning to dog owners walking their pets on coastal paths near cliffs. The coastguards have advised owners to keep their pets under close control, and not to put yourself in danger by chasing an animal in need of rescue. The advice follows an incident in which a seven year old Labrador went missing whilst walking off St Govans Head.

When the coastguards arrived, the dogs owner had become stranded after climbing down the cliff in an attempt to find his pet. The owner was hauled back to safety, though the dog was later found by the search team lying dead having fallen from a pathway above.

The incident isn’t the first of its kind after a dog last month fell approximately 100 feet from a cliff in Peveril Point, Dorset . Incredibly, the dog survived to tell the tale.

Summer appears to be a perilous time of year for animals, with a number of reports emerging of incidents where cats or dogs have been left in cars in the hot weather and have become severely unwell or died in the extreme heat inside the vehicle .
