A dog that found the last person alive in the 9/11 terror attacks has been cloned after the pets owner entered it into a competition. The German Shepherd, called Trakr, was an experienced search and rescue dog at the time of the attacks, owned by retired police officer James Symington. Upon seeing the attacks, Mr Symington drove from his home in Nova Scotia to help with rescue efforts.
Having been awarded an extraordinary service to humanity award after the attacks, as well as featuring in a number of books and magazines, Trakr was entered by his owner into a competition run by Los Angeles based Bio Arts International aiming to find the most worthy pet for cloning. Trakr won the competition, and the company have produced five puppy clones following Trakr’s death two months ago.
Mr Symington hopes the cloned animals will follow Trakr’s example and serve with the police as K9 dogs . Mr Symington said he thought the puppies – name Dejavu, Prodigy, Solace, Trustt and Valor – were identical ‘down to the smallest detail’. The puppies were created after scientists replaced the genes in the canine eggs with genes from Trakr.
