Man Jailed for Dog Fighting Involvement

Tue, 30 Jun 2009

A man described by the RSPCA as a key player in a major dog fighting scene has been sentenced to four months in prison and banned from keeping dogs for life. 44 year old Barkat Hussain from Smethwick, West Midlands, admitted to keeping and training pit-bull dogs in breach of a court order. Mr Hussain was also found to have kept related medical supplies.

It isn’t the first time Mr Hussain has ended up in court for his involvement in animal fighting. He had previously been jailed and banned from keeping dogs after being involved in a mass dog fight. Mr Hussain’s continued involvement in training pet animals to fight prompted District Judge Mark Layton to proclaim Mr Hussain has shown a blatant disregard for court orders.

The conviction follows a raid on premises in Dudley Road, Winson Green, where Hussain worked as a barber . The search uncovered treadmills used to build up dogs muscles, whilst skin staplers, syringes were also found, as well as a solution used by vets to exterminate dogs. Mr Hussain had been keeping two of the dogs in his possession in cages, whilst another dog was kept tied to an upstairs balcony with 59 separate wounds.
