A man pictured hurling a dog into the sea and dragging it out by its neck has spoken out against allegations of animal cruelty. 22 year old Scott Meredith of Southwick was photographed throwing a Staffordshire terrier cross into the water near Hove Lawns, before picking it out of the sea by its neck. The photograph prompted the police and the RSPCA to launch an investigation into the man’s actions.
Mr Meredith revealed that his own pet, Missy, had jumped into the waves, something her owner claims she enjoys doing. His cousin Adam’s dog, Cassie – the dog pictured being thrown into the sea, was too scared to follow Missy into the water, prompting Mr Meredith to throw her in. He claims to have only thrown her in once out of encouragement and that she had enjoyed it once she was in the water.
Mr Meredith’s uncle claimed the animals were well loved and cared for, though he admitted the photographs did make the incident look bad. Mr Meredith’s uncle, who only gave his name as Danny, queried why the police had failed to speak to his nephew despite publicly launching an investigation.
