A man has been found guilty of dog cruelty after allowing his dog to swell to a weight of 40 kilograms. The five year old animal weighed twice the recommended weight for a border collie of his age after owner Ronald West repeatedly ignored advice to put his pet on a diet .
Brighton Magistrates Court found the 62 year old guilty of failing to ensure the welfare of an animal. The court hearing followed numerous visits from animal welfare officers who had advised Mr West to clean his flat, exercise Taz and take him to the vet to clip his very overgrown claws and receive dietary advice . The officers revealed how they had found dog faeces on the floor in every room of the house.
West gave the excuse that he had been cruel with kindness by giving his pet too many treats, whilst blaming the state of the flat on having been unwell with flu. After Mr West repeatedly ignored the advice offered by officers during their numerous visits, the dog was taken away and put into council kennels .
Mr West faces a maximum penalty of £5,000, six months’ imprisonment, or being disqualified from keeping animals.
