Dog Owner Dies from Innocuous Bite

Fri, 06 Nov 2009

A dog owner has died after sustaining a freak injury while playing with his pet dog . Steven Sewell from Hipperholme in Yorkshire was playing fetch with his Alsatian doberman cross while on holiday in northern Scotland when he sustained his seemingly innocuous but tragically fatal injury. The 55 year old retired teacher picked up a stick which he was about to throw when his ten year old dog leapt up and bit his finger.

The bite went through the bone of Mr Sewell’s finger but he said he felt fine at the time. Although he did not wash the wound or put a plaster on it straight away, the family travelled home 300 miles the following day. Upon his return, Mr Sewell began to feel unwell, losing sensation in his fingers and suffering from diarrhoea. He was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax before being transferred to Huddersfield’s Royal Infirmary’s intensive care unit where his condition worsened. Mr Sewell tragically died of organ failure caused by septicaemia a few days later. Angela, his wife of 21 years, said that Judy was not a vicious animal and remained the family pet .
