RSPCA Laments Dog Rolling Problem

Thu, 26 Nov 2009

The RSPCA has voiced their concerns about a new trend emerging called ‘dog rolling’. Dog rolling occurs when two groups, typically young males, meet and have their dogs fight to settle arguments by proving whose pet dog is the toughest. The problem has become so serious that two in three of the animal charity’s dog fighting investigations relate to dog rolling. Clare Robinson from the RSPCA said it is very hard to crack down on as it is so informal, and as soon as an incident is reported, the groups disperse.

To make matters even more tricky for the RSPCA, the dogs are not banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act, as the owners are able to sidestep the rules by cross-breeding. The RSPCA are presently lobbying the government to bring in new legislation. Vets have joined the charity in calling for the compulsory microchipping of all dogs, while the RSPCA would also like to see tougher tenancy agreements in areas where dog rolling is rife.

Dave Grant, a vet at Harmsworth animal hospital, has said that more action needs to be taken against irresponsible dog owners.
