A Scottish dog rescue centre has appealed for funding to help the animal charity stay alive. Boxer Welfare Scotland was recently forced to pay £6,000 in kennel costs, leaving the charity with almost no rescue funds. The Peterhead based charity has rehomed nearly 370 pet dogs since launching in 2005, but trustee Karen Cox fears it will not be able to rehome any more pets without donations.
The number of unwanted boxer dogs is relatively high in Scotland. While the difficult economic climate is receiving the usual blame for the situation, the Scottish Parliament’s decision in 2007 to ban the docking of all dog tails in Scotland has also contributed to the situation.
While the charity supports the ban, some dog breeds were produced in greater numbers to take advantage of the demand for docked puppies before the ban came in. Unfortunately, many of the boxers born at the time have now ended up at the rescue centre.
With few people applying for boxers, the centre needs funding to be able to keep going and to provide a home to the unwanted dogs.
