A Nottinghamshire couple have begun a project aiming at bringing abandoned dogs to the UK and rehoming them. Mr and Mrs Beauchamp brought back a German Shepherd and a poodle type dog breed from an animal sanctuary called SARA two years ago. The charity is based in Lanzarote, where the couple have travelled for the past 12 years, and has inspired the couple to set up a similar charity.
SARA face huge problems with pet Podencos – a type of dog breed with an unusual appearance. The dogs are so common in the Canary Islands that hundreds of the animals have been abandoned, leaving charities and vets overwhelmed. Much of the local population in the area live in apartments or small houses, with little space for pets .
Rick has organised for some of the dogs to be flown to Germany where he picks them up. He travelled to Hamburg to pick up four dogs earlier this month and another four will travel the same route in spring.
On arrival in the UK, the dogs already have a passport, and have been inoculated, micro-chipped and neutered . The couple are seeking a £250 adoption fee for each dog to help keep them running, though the real cost of keeping the dog is closer to £300 according to Rick Beauchamp.
