A pensioner has been fined £200 and ordered to pay £350 in compensation after her dog escaped from her home and bit the face of a five year old boy. The incident took place on 19th May in the Mayfield area of Edinburgh . The boy was playing outside with his brother late in the afternoon when he saw the animal running towards him.
The dog bit the boy on his right cheek, causing four wounds, one of which was particularly deep. Fiscal depute Sally Clark said there were concerns the boy may be left with permanent scars. The boy was described as ‘extremely shaken’ and left with blood streaming from his mouth.
The Lakeland Terrier, called Pip, was owned by 67 year old Frieda Lang. She had her pet dog put down on the same day as the attack, and says she is extremely remorseful for the incident. Police said Mrs Laing had left her garden gate open. She admitted to being the owner of a dangerously out of control dog, and has been banned from having any dogs for three years. Sheriff Neil MacKinnon said he was impressed by the level of remorse she displayed.
