Dog Owners Advised to Check Pet Insurance Policies

Tue, 20 Oct 2009

Dog owners are being advised to check that their pet insurance policies are sufficiently comprehensive. The warning follows an incident in which a dog owner nearly had to fork out £1,000 as the insurance company sought to avoid a payout. 49 year old Rob Maunder from Hertfordshire is the owner of a two year old Newfoundland dog. In the final week of 2008 Mr Maunder took his pet, Max, to the park where it was playing with several other dogs .

Things turned sour as a greyhound suddenly yelped, and half an hour later Mr Maunder was informed by another dog owner that his animal had been responsible. Mr Maunder had not seen the incident but knew it had to have been his dog, as it was the only one of the pets present which could have kept up with the greyhound.

The fellow dog owner had taken his dog to the local vets surgery, where a vet demanded a £1,000 payment up front to perform the surgery on the sizeable wound. Mr Maunder responsibly agreed to pay and sought reimbursement from his pet insurance provider, Petplan. Petplan initially refused to pay and it took several months and numerous complaints from Mr Maunder for the insurer to payout.
