Warning signs have been erected in Nottinghamshire woodland following the death of at least three dogs . Five more dogs have been taken ill having been on Forestry Commission land near Sherwood Forest . The signs warn pet owners to keep their animals on a lead in Blidworth Woods, Haywood Oaks, Sherwood Pines and Thieves Wood.
Natural England is carrying out the tests and say that investigations are ongoing as no cause had been uncovered as yet. Vets believe poisoning to be the most likely cause but are refusing to rule out the possibility that the problem could be natural.
Vet Jon Ruben saw one of the ill dogs which he said was severely ill. Mr Ruben revealed how the animal was partially collapsed, had difficulty breathing and was semi-comatosed. One of the animals’ owners revealed her pet had died howling with pain, while another had been sick and had diarrhoea. The animals had not been seen eating anything they shouldn’t have, and nothing that could have caused the illness has been vomited up.
The incidents follow a warning from pet insurance provider Sainsburys Finance of the dangers of letting dogs play with sticks or in ponds.
