Pet owners are being warned to look after their pets during the festive period, as it is a period when dog owners can be notoriously ignorant in what scraps they feed their pets. The American Humane Association (AHA) has called for animal owners to implement changes ahead of the period to ensure dogs do not suffer from overfeeding at Christmas .
The charity uses the example of a five second rule, whereby cats or dogs may eat any food on the floor up to five seconds after it lands on the floor. However, with plenty of food around at Christmas, and some of it highly dangerous to pets, dog owners are warned against being ‘generous’ to their pets.
Particularly dangerous foods for dogs include dark chocolate and dough used in Christmas foods. The dough can rise in their stomachs and can result in bloating or worse.
Meanwhile, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also pointed out the risks posed to pets by holiday arts and crafts such as glue or glitter.
