The Kennel Club has warned that new dog control orders may have animal welfare implications. A number of councils across England and Wales have introduced restrictions on where dog owners may walk their pets, with dogs no longer allowed to run free in a vast number of beaches, parks and open spaces across the UK. The Local Government Association (LGA) claim the increasing number of dog control orders is merely a reaction to public demand, with parents eager to ensure dog mess is cleaned up in areas where their children may be running around.
However, The Kennel Club has received a large volume of complaints from dog walkers, and has voiced its concerns to local MPs and councils. It is feared that by demanding pets are kept on a lead, the new legislation could be harming some breeds which require vigorous exercise – a claim supported by a number of vets .
Councils must place an advertisement in the local press as part of a consultation period prior to the approval of any proposed legislation, though the Kennel Club warn that dog owners may not see these advertisements.
