A 51 year old woman has pleaded guilty to eight cruelty charges after she abandoned 99 St Bernards . Mary Ellen Collis from Thrapston admitted seven counts of causing unnecessary suffering to 85 dogs and another charge of failing to meet the welfare needs of 14 dogs.
The dogs were found in kennels in Northamptonshire last year. The kennels were littered with urine and faeces, with the pet dogs ranging from nine weeks to eight years old. The animals had no fresh food or water, and their coats were filthy and covered in faeces. A further nine puppies were kept in a separate pen which also had no food or water. The animals have since been rehomed following an RSPCA campaign.
After being treated by vets, eight five of the dogs were found to be suffering from untreated medical conditions including abscesses, ear infections, eye conditions and ulcerated skin. Many of the dogs were also emaciated. One dog had to be put down by the vet due to the level of pain. The vet concluded the dogs must have been neglected for several weeks or months.
Ms Collis, who had been on holiday in Tenerife when the dogs were discovered, will be sentenced on October 23rd.
