Responsible Dog Owners to be Rewarded in Inverness

Fri, 18 Sep 2009

Pet owners in Inverness are set to be rewarded for correctly disposing of their dogs’ mess. The Highland Council enforcement officers will be handing out vouchers to ‘responsible owners’ in the next few months. The vouchers will be redeemable at a veterinary surgery for worming tablets, as the council looks to protect dogs from the dog roundworm which is believed to contaminate most of the city’s parklands. The infection also poses a threat to the health of humans, particularly children.

It is the second scheme since May launched by the authorities in a bid to combat dog fouling. In May, the environmental health patrols joined forces with the police as part of an effort to catch those responsible for dog fouling. Those caught dropping litter, fly tipping or not cleaning up after their pets faced a fine of up to £50, with media reports revealing that eleven people were issued with these fixed penalty notices for not cleaning up after their pets, including three young mothers.

Sonia Howell, Manager of Crown Vets, a partner in the scheme, affirmed that removing dog waste from public areas is an important measure in combating the spread of disease.
