A pensioner has left her house to Birmingham Dogs Home after passing away in 2007. Freda Deakin from Moseley stated in her will that the money raised from the sale of her property should be given to Digbeth Dogs Centre. Mrs Deakin was a dog lover and had rehomed several dogs from the shelter. Having died from lung cancer aged 75, it has taken two years to sell her home in Hall Green. The bungalow was sold at auction for £180,000, with the remaining £172,000 donated to the animal charity .
The donation will make a big difference to Birmingham Dogs Home. General Manager of the Dogs Home, Simon Price, said they were now able to refurbish the beds and kennels, and that they wouldn’t even be open to look after unwanted pets without the generosity of people like Freda. A plaque has been placed on the Dogs Home’s Wall of Remembrance in honour of Freda.
Pet insurance provider Sainsbury’s Finance recently revealed that the number of stray dogs is increasing in the UK. Animal charities across the UK have called for people to come forward to rehome dogs .
