RSPCA Criticised Over Treatment of Dogs

Tue, 01 Sep 2009

The German Shepherd Dog Rescue organisation has criticised the RSPCA after the animal welfare charity put down 10 German Shepherds following the death of the dogs owner. The German Shepherd Dog Rescue organisation insist the RSPCA should have offered them the chance to try to rehome the dogs, and have cast doubts over claims that not one of the ten pet dogs was suitable for rehoming.

The RSPCA claim that the dogs had been signed over to them by a relative of the owner of the pets, and insist that the relatives knew the dogs would be put down as they had a severe skin condition which made them unsuitable for rehoming. Officers from the animal charity’s base at Pontardawe in Swansea Valley instead decided that the bolt gun would be the most suitable form of euthanasia .

It appears that the relatives of the owner of the pet dogs made efforts to have the dogs rehomed, but did not contact German Shepherd Dog Rescue. After other charities turned down their requests to take the animals into their care, the relatives turned to the RSPCA, even though it meant having the animals put down.
