Consider Implications Before Getting a Dog

The head of general insurance at Marks and Spencer has urged people thinking of getting a pet to consider the implications of having an animal before getting one. Animal charities, dogs kennels and rehoming centres have been overwhelmed with the large numbers of unwanted pets in recent months and years. While the credit crunch has been blamed by many, Andrew Ferguson from M&S also called on people to carefully consider whether they can give an animal the necessary attention before getting a pet.

M&S Pet Insurance recently published a series of guidelines aimed at raising awareness among people of the implications of getting a pet, highlighting the importance of factors such as the lifestyle, age and breed of a dog . Though acknowledging the numerous benefits to looking after a pet, Mr Ferguson did acknowledge that there are certain costs.

People thinking of getting a pet should think carefully about which animal is most suitable for them. Given the attention that dogs require, they may not be suitable for people and families with busy lifestyle, for whom a cat may be a better choice.
