Couple Hit Out at Vet Who Put Family Dog Down

Tue, 20 Apr 2010

A family have hit out at a vet who had their dog put down as they could not afford a £1,240 operation. Andrew and Lisa Geddes from Northumberland were the owners of a pet Staffordshire bull terrier named Coco. The animal was due to give birth to puppies, but as it became clear that Coco was struggling to give birth, Mr and Mrs Geddes took her to the vets . Having been initially told that a consultation would cost £39, the couple were shocked to hear that they would need to spend at least £1,240 on a caesarean operation.

Eager to find the necessary treatment more affordably elsewhere, the couple requested to have Coco back in order to take her to see another vet. However, the vet refused to release Coco, claiming it would be a criminal office under welfare laws to release an unwell animal without knowing where it was going. Instead, the vet told the couple that they had 24 hours to find the money, or they would have to put the dogs down.

As the argument grew more heated, the police were called, though with no way of finding the money, the couple eventually agreed to pay £90 to have Coco and the six puppies put down. The incident serves yet another reminder of the importance of having adequate pet insurance .
