Dog Owner Fined Over Noisy Pet

A dog owner has been fined £450 after a series of complaints were made about the noise made by a pet dog. 51 year old Julie Coxhead from Creswell appeared at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court after Bolsover District Council received a number of complaints about the level of noise made by the animal when it was left alone. Following a council investigation, the dog was ruled as causing a noise nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act, prompting the issuance of an abatement requiring Mrs Coxhead to stop the pets problem.

However, two separate council checks in the subsequent months found no improvement in the situation. Consequently, Mrs Coxhead was taken to court, where magistrates issued a total fine of £450. Just £235 of the sum was a fine, while Mrs Coxhead was also ordered to pay £200 in legal costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Vets and animal charities such as the RSPCA have previously warned of the risks of leaving dogs at home on their own, as animals can be prone to make noise when bored, though it is rare for animals to be sufficiently noisy to result in a court date.
