The manager of a dog kennels has said she is baffled at the sudden influx of unwanted animals . Though there are certain times of the year when animal charities and dog kennels expect to be inundated with abandoned pets, Sarah Wilkinson from Cleadon Kennels cannot understand the high volume of strays she has received in the past seven days. 46 stray dogs have arrived at the kennels in the past seven days, 27 of which were found in Sunderland and the remainder in South Tyneside.
The kennels has a capacity of just 54, and has been tested to the full by the recent arrival of German Shepherds, collies, bull mastiffs and Staffordshire bull terriers . The wardens who found the pets looked to see if the dogs were microchipped, and were pleasantly surprised at the number of dogs who were chipped. Unfortunately, however, much of the information was out of date.
The kennels have ensured the dogs are in good health, with any unwell animals sent to see a vet . There are, however, some animals who may have to be put down due to medical and behavioural problems. It is hoped that visitors to the kennels will rehome a considerable number of the dogs in the coming weeks.
