RSPCA Rehome More Staffies Than Any Other Dog

Thu, 29 Apr 2010

Staffordshire bull terriers were the most commonly rehomed dog by the RSPCA last year according to new figures. The animal charity rehomed 507 of the 615 ‘Staffies’ and crosses homed across its 13 regional centres. The animal charity said the prevalence of abandoned Staffies – above and beyond any other dog breed – could be attributed to the penchant of irresponsible owners to own a Staffie as part of developing their image.

Commenting on this trend, head of the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Centre in Potters Bar, Anna White, urged animal lovers not to be deterred by the status dogs image of Staffordshire bull terriers, insisting the animals can make excellent family pets .

Jack Russells were the second most rehomed dog of any canine pet, closely followed by German shepherds, border collies and Labradors . 363 Staffies were rehomed in the last year, compared with 144 Staffie crosses, though the number may in reality be even higher as figures could not be compiled from all of the RSPCA centres and branches. The RSPCA urges anyone thinking of getting a dog to visit their local rehoming centre .
