Snoozing Guard Dog Retires After Burglary

Tue, 13 Apr 2010

A pub guard dog has been relieved of its duties after sleeping through the pubs only burglary in 12 years. The Doberman Alsatian cross named Taz was asleep upstairs as burglars raided the pub, taking cash from quiz machines and charity boxes as well as hundreds of pounds worth of alcohol. Despite their haul, which also included an iPod Nano and a dishwasher tray believed to have been used to carry the goods, the cleaner had not realised that the pub had been burgled when on duty the following morning.

The owners of the pub bought Taz as a pet in 1998 to help protect the Dartmouth Arms in Dartmouth, Devon, though now aged 11, Taz is not the feisty animal he once was. Landlord Mark Keel commented that Taz is becoming blind and deaf, and was found fast asleep and snoring after the burglary. Vets had warned the pets owners that the dogs health was deteriorating, and they have now taken the decision to install a burglar alarm rather than relying on Taz.

The break-in is believed to have happened between 2am and 7am last Saturday, with Mr Keel commenting that it is the first time that he has been burgled since he started managing the pub .
