Healthy Dogs Being Put Down as Bull Breeds Abandoned

Tue, 03 Aug 2010

The Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has revealed that it put down nearly 3,000 healthy dogs last year because they were seen as too dangerous to rehome. The animal rescue centre put down a total of 2,815 dogs last year – a third of the number it took in – while 1,931 of those dogs had been healthy.

Many of the dogs being put down are bull breeds and bull breed crosses such as Staffordshire bull terriers . After gangs started using the dog breeds as ‘weapon dogs’, there has been an increase in the number of these dogs being bred, to the point where supply far exceeds demand. The result has been an increase in the number of bull breeds being abandoned, with these pet dogs now accounting for half of Battersea’s long term residents.

The dogs are difficult to rehome owing to their aggressive traits, and recent high profile attacks involving the animals . Many of the dogs have to be kept in individual kennels at the centre, further reducing the space available, and ultimately forcing the centre to put down many of the dogs even if they are healthy.
