Pioneering Vet to Apply Knowledge of Human Bones and Joints to Animals

Thu, 05 Aug 2010

A Risca vet who recently became the UK’s only vet to be awarded a specialist qualification in the study of human bones and joints is to apply his knowledge to animals . Russell Chandler gained a masters degree in orthopaedic engineering at Cardiff University, and whereas the majority of his peers will be human orthopaedic surgeons, Chandler plans to use his new knowledge of bones and joints to treat cats and dogs at the Alphavet Referrals veterinary practice .

The 46 year old from Newport is already regarded as something of an expert on the subject, with hundreds of pets referred to him from more than 50 veterinary practices throughout South Wales. The pioneering vet has already treated pets for problems ranging from joint conditions to paralysis, and uses specialist equipment for bone implants and keyhole joint surgery.

Having trained to be a vet at Bristol University, Chandler went on to obtain a postgraduate qualification in small animal orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and as part of his recent degree, also wrote a dissertation on spine disease in pet dogs.
