Rescue Centre Calls on Rural Residents to Adopt Dogs

Fri, 20 Aug 2010

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has appealed for more rural residents to adopt pet dogs. Although the animal charity is based in the centre of London, meaning many of its dogs end up in homes in the capital, some of the dog breeds housed by the rescue centre are better suited to rural surroundings where there are vast open expanses where they can roam free.

Vets have frequently advised pet owners of the importance of ensuring their pets receive enough exercise. Some of the larger dog breeds such as mastiffs require bigger spaces in order to exercise properly, prompting senior rehomer at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Jenny Dugdale, to call on more rural homeowners to adopt animals from rescue centres.

The appeal comes at a time when rescue centres are being challenged by the vast number of unwanted animals in the UK – a trend captured by the recent news of the London based rescue centre having to put down almost 3,000 dogs in a year because of the excessive supply of bull breed types.
