Thirsty Dogs May be Unwell, Pet Health Expert Advises

A pet health care professional has urged dog owners to be vigilant of their dogs drinking habits as it could offer an insight into the pets wellbeing. Dr Tracy Dewhirst acknowledges that pets will naturally drink more in the summer months as the warmer weather dehydrates animals, but Dr Dewhirst has warned that excessive water intake can indicate that a dog may be suffering from one of a number of conditions. Among the possible conditions are diabetes, kidney problems, liver disease or even cancer .

With dogs in need of water in the warmer weather, it is of course important that water is frequently available to pets, but Dr Dewhirst suggests that pet owners should keep a record of the amount of water being consumed by their pets by measuring how much water they put in the bowl each time it is filled up. Vets advise that a dog which weighs 20 lbs and drinks more than 960 mls a day may be suffering from a condition of some sort, so pet owners should take their animals to see a vet if they are drinking much more than this.
