Women Charged After Dog Attack

Tue, 31 Aug 2010

Police have charged a 33 year old woman under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 after two Rottweiler dogs attacked a ten year old girl. The woman was charged with failing to keep the animals under control after Rhianna Kidd from Dundee was left needing emergency surgery for a fractured jaw and bites to her arms and legs.

Rhianna’s grandmother Irene Grady saw the attack from her window before running out in an attempt to scare off the dogs. A police investigation successfully traced the two dogs, which have since been put in kennels and will be put down.

It is the latest incident in which a young child has been the victim of a dog attack, and comes at a time when the Scottish government is looking into tightening the legislation on dangerous dogs . Indeed, new legislation will come into force next spring after Scottish National Party MSP Christine Grahame introduced a members bill. There has been a significant increase in the number of illegal dog breeds being kept as pets – an increase which can be partly attributed to the growing use of weapon dogs among gangs in the UK.
