Dog Allergic to Cats, Pet Food and Walks

Thu, 11 Feb 2010

A dog has been diagnosed with a number of allergies including pet food, chasing cats and going for walks. Four year old Alsatian-Collie cross Joey had suffered from frequent rashes, prompting his owner, Scott Muirhead, to take him to the vets . 36 year old Mr Muirhead from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, said it had taken a year to figure out what was causing his animal to break out in boils and rashes.

A vet at Taylors Practice in Glasgow was able to get to the bottom of the problem, with a blood test revealing an almost comprehensive list of allergies. Although Joey showed no signs of allergies until last year, the tests revealed he has become allergic to meats, dairy produces, cat hair, other dogs hair, long grass, daises and dandelions.

Mr Muirhead and his partner Lisa McCormack have been told they may no longer give Joey any treats, while Joey must be placed on a special dog diet revolving around barley, porridge and potatoes. The vets are also trying a new medication to see if it helps, and Mr Muirhead has been pleased to see Joey’s hair has started to grow back.
