Dog Owner Jailed After Attack

Thu, 25 Feb 2010

A man has been jailed after his pet dog attacked a guide dog, in a ruling which serves as a warning to other animal owners. 18 year old John-Jo Madden from London admitted a charge of possessing a dangerous dog in a public place at Hendon magistrates, and was subsequently given a three month jail sentence, as well as an additional two year suspended sentence. Mr Madden was also banned from keeping dogs for 10 years, ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid work and told to pay £1,200 in compensation to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and £500 to the animals owner.

The attack took place at London’s Cricklwood station in October of last year, and left the guide dog’s 57 year old owner extremely shocked. Fortunately, the guide dog, named Neela, has fully recovered after sustaining puncture wounds to her neck. CCTV cameras caught the unsightly three minute attack, revealing Mr Madden to be drinking a can of beer and loitering in the area prior to the attack. His efforts to intervene in the attack proved fruitless, and the magistrates decided they didn’t need a vets opinion to order the pets destruction under the Dangerous Dogs Act, though they have yet to track it down after Mr Madden gave it away.
