Pet Insurance Provider Warns of Cold Weather Dog Hazards

Fri, 19 Feb 2010

A pet insurance provider has urged animal owners to ensure their pets are covered in light of the recent cold weather. The cold weather and the hazards associated with it could leave pets with serious injuries, Petplan warned. The insurance company’s vet of the year, Ben Jones, advised that being aware of the potential dangers could help to avoid health problems and insurance claims or costly vets bills.

In addition to the obvious cold weather dangers, Mr Jones pointed to grit as a source of injury for dogs . He advised pet owners to ensure their dogs paws aren’t cut or injured if walking on gritted pavements, as the grit can severely irritate footpads, or even dry them to the point of splitting open. Road salt can also pose dangers to pet dogs, and owners have been urged not to allow their dogs to lick road salt from their paws and fur as this can cause stomach problems.

Meanwhile, owners who are wary of letting their pets outside in the cold weather are urged to ensure there is plenty to keep their pet active indoors. The warning from Petplan follows advice recently issued by the RSPCA warning dog owners to keep their animals away from frozen ponds.
