A significant number of pet owners are having to put their animals to sleep as they cannot afford the vet bills and do not have pet insurance, according to Sainsburys Pet Insurance . The insurer has revealed that 56 per cent of vets questioned claimed to have put down cats or dogs which could have been treated because their owners couldn’t afford to pay the necessary bill. An even higher proportion of vets – 88 per cent – said pet owners had rejected a treatment for their pets which they had recommended due to the cost.
Manager of Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance, Joanne Mallon, also reported an increase in the cost of vets bills. Ms Mallon claims that vets bills are becoming 12 per cent more expensive each year, prompting her to label the decision not to take out pet insurance as a false economy.
According to Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance, the ‘vast majority’ of animal owners do not have pet insurance, which Ms Mallon believes results in a number of animals being needlessly put down. According to Ms Mallon, the recent advances in veterinary science have made it possible for vets to treat a vast number of illnesses.
