Rubber Duck Found in Dogs Stomach After 18 Months

A dog has undergone an operation to remove a rubber duck . The pet Patterdale terrier became ill just before Christmas, prompting its owners to take the animal to the vet to ascertain what was causing the vomiting. Initial tests failed to uncover any problems, though a subsequent x-ray revealed that the dog, Spike, had a rubber duck lodged in his stomach.

Having seen the rubber duck on the x-ray, the pets owner, 52 year old Colin Smith from Thorner near Leeds, recalled how the dog had taken the toy from the bathroom 18 months previously. Mr Smith and his wife Lorraine Fenton assumed that he had chewed up the toy, and that it would’ve passed through his system.

Mr Smith said he was relieved to have discovered the cause of the problem, despite the operation setting him back £1,060. Despite the toy spending 18 months in the dogs small intestine, Mr Smith has kept the duck as a memento, and says the only difference is that it has lost its yellow paint. While such cases are extremely rare, they do point to the value of comprehensive pet insurance policies.
