A new survey by pet insurance provider LV= has found that thousands of Britons has taken a sick day to look after an unwell pet in the last five years. 2,036 adult pet owners were questioned as part of the study, with 38 per cent of respondents revealed to have either owned an animal which has died in the past five years, or a dog or cat which had been unwell in that period.
Of these respondents, 18 per cent admitted to taking time off work to grieve for late pets, or to look after unwell animals . That figure equates to 379,000 workers phoning in sick and taking paid leave. LV= estimates that these workers are costing businesses £18 million each year in lost workforce hours, with an average of 2.4 days off per worker who admitted to taking sick leave due to a pet.
The issue of unwell dogs and pets also affects younger children, and qualifications regulator Ofqual recently confirmed that any pupil taking GCSE or A-level exams would be granted an extra 2 per cent in the event of a recent death of a family pet.
