25 Sheep Killed in Dog Attacks

Fri, 22 Jan 2010

Rural pet owners are being warned to keep their pets on a lead while walking, following the death of 25 sheep in the last five weeks. The attacks have occurred in the Rivington countryside, prompting an increase in the number of countryside police patrols. United Utilities – the company which maintains and owns the Rivington countryside – has been inundated with complaints from farmers .

One such farmer, John Needham, has lost more than 20 sheep due to injuries sustained during attacks, many of which have been inflicted by dogs . Many of the sheep were not killed instantly, but had to be taken to local vets to be put down as a result of their injuries.

Mr Needham, from Higher Knoll farm, accepted animal owners’ rights to walk their dog, but urged them to obey the rules. Mr Needham said there will be serious financial consequences from losing the sheep, but said that the animals suffering was more distressing to him.

Extra warning signs have been erected asking people to keep their dogs on a leash, and any people shown not to be keeping their dog under control will be subject to action.
