Dog Coat Sales Surge

The cold weather in the UK of late has boosted dog coat sales at Pets at Home. The retailer also saw increased sales of rabbit hutch covers as it enjoyed a lucrative Christmas period with a 6.7 per cent increase in like for like sales up to January 7th, while the 41 weeks up to January 7th saw a 9.8 per cent increase in sales.

Of the 1.4 million presents bought for pets at the chain over Christmas, products which keep cats, dogs and other animals warm proved particularly popular, with a 70 per cent increase in the number of dog coats sold compared to last year. There has been no strenuous advice from vets to animal owners that coats are required.

Pets at Home has 252 stores and recently put itself up for sale. It is believed that four private equity houses – Apax Partners, Bain, KKR and TPG 0 have progressed to the second round of bidding for the company, which is expected to sell for more than £700 million.

However, the improved sales were not common to all retailers, with John Lewis reporting a drop in sales for the last week as shoppers were discouraged by the snow and ice. However, John Lewis did enjoy a massive 56 per cent increase in online sales.
