A dog has been rescued after a remarkable trip across the Baltic Sea . The animal was first spotted floating on an ice floe on the Vistula river, having drifted 100 kilometres inland through the city of Grudziadz on a piece of ice. Local firefighters were unable to rescue the pet dog, though the crew of a Polish research ship – the Baltica – spotted the dog 24 kilometres from land floating on the Baltic Sea.
Since the dogs rescue, two people have come forward claiming to be his owner, though they have since cancelled their visits to the ship. The ship’s captain, Jerzy Wosachlo, said the crew had adopted the dog as one of them until the true owner of the dog comes forward. Vets have given the dog a clean bill of health, and the dog is said to be enjoying the company of the sailors, after enjoying a sausage breakfast with the crew after a good night’s sleep in the ship’s laboratory in the warmth of a blanket .
The dog, nicknamed Baltic, will set sail with the ship on a short mission on February 10th unless its owners come forward.
