Pet Owners Advised of Need for Appropriate Training Techniques

Tue, 19 Jan 2010

Pet owners have been warned that dog training techniques marketed as appropriate for all dog breeds are crude and misleading. Shaun Ellis, the man who famously integrated into a pack of wolves, has spoken of the importance of the ranking system is among dogs . While his experiences focus on wolves, Ellis claims their DNA is just 0.2 per cent different from that of a domestic canine animal . Ellis has also advised dog owners to consider a wide number of factors in deciding which training techniques to use.

Many pet training techniques rely on the assumption that it is necessary to assert Alpha dominance when training a pet, though Ellis claims that not all dogs seek to become the Alpha, and therefore to assume that role when training pets may not be useful. So while this approach may work for dogs displaying Alpha potential, more nervous, shy dogs do not need to be subjected to such tough love techniques.

The advice comes at a time when many people will be pet owners for the first time having received a dog at Christmas. Vets have called on first time animal owners to make sure that they have taken the necessary steps and vaccinations to protect their dog’s health, while pet insurance providers have once again asserted the value of pet insurance .
