Bristol Dog Owners Warned of Parvo Virus Outbreak

Fri, 09 Jul 2010

Dog owners in Bristol are being urged to have their pets vaccination following a steep increase in the number of cases of parvo virus in the city. The PDSA and RSPCA typically treat less than one dog a month for the virus, but the clinics have seen a total of roughly 20 dogs with symptoms of the virus since May. The Avon Lodge clinic has seen 12 cases of the virus in the past month alone, with one case culminating in the death of a pet .

The virus causes vomiting and diarrhoea and attacks the animals bone marrow, gut lining and even the heart in some cases. Fortunately, however, it can be effectively vaccinated against, with vets urging pet owners to take this course of action to avoid the virus spreading any further. Manager of the RSPCA clinic, Mandy Stone, echoed this advice, insisting the current outbreak wouldn’t have happened if there were not so many unvaccinated pets .

As well as being advised to have their pets vaccinated, dog owners in the region are being urged to be especially wary if their dog develops diarrhoea or starts vomiting.
