Northumberland Recognises Dog Tourism Advantage

Tue, 01 Jun 2010

Northumberland Tourism has identified dog owners as a potentially lucrative source of business for the region’s tourism industry. In recent years, beach bans have become increasingly widespread in the UK, preventing pet owners from walking their dogs along the country’s coastlines. With this in mind, Northumberland Tourism has recognised it has a distinct advantage in attracting owners, as dog owners remain allowed to walk their animals freely on the majority of the county’s famous coastline.

Julie Gregory, owner of Seahouses based Springhill Farm, which has won awards for its caravan site and self-catering cottages, predicts that her business would lose 50 per cent of its guests if Northumberland’s beaches were subjected to the same dog control orders as have been passed in other regions, claiming that Northumberland’s more relaxed attitude to ‘dog tourists’ gives it a vital edge over other regions.

Dog control orders have been passed for a number of reasons in the UK. The measures have been used as a means of reducing dog mess in many areas, with vets and animal charities such as the RSPCA warning of the health dangers of having dog mess littering a region.
