Pet care specialists Pedigree have donated £50,000 to stray dogs charities this month after residents in five UK cities found the ‘golden ghost leashes’ left in busy spots around the UK as part of The Pedigree Adoption Drive. In an attempt to raise awareness of the vast number of abandoned pet dogs in the UK – estimated at 108,000 last year – Pedigree launched the Adoption Drive in 2008, and has thus far raised more than £1 million to help stray animals in the UK.
The Ghost Leashes were placed in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle throughout May. The leashes were placed in commuter hotspots, such as Kings Cross and Waterloo in London, with those who found the leash required to text a special code to prompt a £500 donation. All of the funds raised will be spread amongst members of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes via a grant system.
The scheme comes at a busy time for RSPCA animal rescue homes, which have seen a 10.3 per cent increase in the number of pets being abandoned between January and April of this year.
